Why You Need To Listen To Your Body

I had a nagging ache, and I thought it might be more than just soreness. But the truth is, I ignored it. I ignored the something doesn't feel right feeling. I pushed through.

And time and time again, I pushed through.

I suppose I started having a few issues when I had my freak accident last year with the neighbor's dog. (When The Unexpected Happens)  Things have felt off since then, like my body is just twisted. I've always had issues with my pelvis being rotated, and I knew that was an ongoing issue.

But this week after a particular faster treadmill run, I had pain in my left hip. Not just tenderness, but I was feeling pain.

I did back off slightly with exercise, but you'll notice I said slightly.

Yesterday, I hopped on the treadmill for a 2 mile run. I felt the hip, but I didn't really feel pain until around mile 1.80. And of course I didn't stop. I mean, I could make it to 2 miles right? And I did, but I hobbled off of the treadmill. I knew then that I'd really messed up.

I iced. I took 800mg of advil, and I waited for relief. The relief never came. It hurts to stand. It hurts to sit. It hurts to lay down .

Today, I went to the sports urgent care clinic. The x-ray shows that my pelvis isn't broken (whew). Although I do have a bone spur, and somehow I now have a twisted spine. Say what?!? I noticed that before the doctor even came in to see it. So it is apparent that I have a lot of imbalances.

That being said, I go to physical therapy this week to start hopefully a plan of action to get me back to where I need to be.

According to my strength tests, I don't seem to have any apparent tears, but my bursa seems to be extremely inflamed. I had my first and hopefully last cortisone shot in my life. That thing hurt, like it's still hurting. My leg and hip and back are just burning.

I was told to rest. And if in a couple of weeks I was still in pain, to come back for further tests to check for strains and tears. The doctor does think that I have strained my hip, but with the inflammation from the bursa, it's just super hard to tell where all of the pain is coming from.

So, we'll see what happens in physical therapy this week. Hopefully the painful shot is going to help. And hopefully what other damage that I have done will heal quickly.

She did say that I could do upper body work. But every time I've ever been to physical therapy, they usually refuse to allow me to do anything other than their routine. So time will tell.

For now, I hurt.... like really hurt... and I'm angry at myself for not listening. I should have listened. I should have rested way before now. I should have reached out for some medical help when I knew that things have felt off for awhile now. I should have strengthened my core and my glutes. I should have done a lot of things... and now I am suffering the consequences.

Hopefully this time I have learned my lesson.... and I will learn to listen to my body!

    1. Thank you! I'm hoping that PT can help, although so far I've never had a lot of luck with them. But hopefully this time it will work!

Self Care Is Not Selfish It's Necessary

It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. And I'll say it just one more time in case you didn't hear me. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. I have found through experience that when I'm not taking care of myself, not only do I suffer but my family suffers. So ditch the mom guilt and take the time that you need! I have a tendency to keep pushing my needs aside until I reach a breaking point. We've had a very busy fun summer so far. However, I've struggled to get some quality ' me ' time to decompress. I'll spare you the meltdown that ensued. But the reality check that followed prompted me to take action.

Running My Life

Wow, has it really been 2 years since my last post? I suppose that I allowed life to get in the way. For any faithful blog readers, I apologize. Although, I'm not sure how many people actually read blogs anymore. I think most people use other social media platforms.  (By the way, drop by and say hi on Insta. )  But for some reason, each year when I pay for my google domain, I can't seem to let it go. As silly as it sounds, this little space is mine. And lately I've been struggling with ownership and acceptance. And my domain renewal was a not so gentle reminder that I have a voice .  Seriously, you'd think by 48 that I'd have this figured out - nope - apparently not. However, I am wise enough to know that we have a choice to allow situations to harms us or make us stronger. I'm choosing to let this mid-life quandary make me stronger. And because of this, I'm setting goals, taking charge, and reexamining priorities.  Movin' on...

When The Planner In You Must Be Flexible

In case you haven’t figured this out by now, I’m a planner. I know - shocker right?!? :) So although I love substitute teaching, it’s making the planner in me anxious. And it’s been reeking havoc on my workouts. Basically the morning of or maybe the night before, I find out if I’m working. So my day ( that I thought I had planned ) can be turned upside down in an instant. But, truthfully, isn’t that really the same with everyone?
