#TuesdayTidbit - Winter Running Tips

Here is another #TuesdayTidbit. Being from Mississippi, I wasn't prepared for Pennsylvania Winters. Now, don't get me wrong, it gets cold in Mississippi, and I did my fair share of running in the cold, but I wasn't prepared for Pennsylvania.

My first year here,
I refused to shell out the money for winter gear. I was convinced that my long pants that I had always worn was just fine. Truth - I almost froze to death - or it sure felt like it.

So my 2nd year year, I went to the Under Armour store. Not saying that UA is the only cold gear or the best, but it's what I use, and I have found it to do it's job.

So this is what works for me:

1. Layers - I have a tendency to overdress sometimes. So I have found that layering is the way to go. If I get too hot I can take off a layer, drop it off if I'm running loops near the car/house, or I can tie it around me.

2. Cold gear is awesome. My problem was my lower half of my body. The top half I could pile on the layers. The lower half was freezing without cold gear pants. So I wear cold gear - it really has made a difference for me. I will occasionally put on an extra layer depending on just how cold it is. For sub 0 temps, I will put on a base layer, cold gear, and top that with sweat pants. Like I said this is what works for me.

3. Cover your heard. If it's cold out, I always wear a hat. And sometimes I will even wear a balaclava hat. It does really make a difference.

4. Gloves - usually 2 pair - and hand warmers if it's frigid out. My hands are always freezing. So I'm always usually double gloved. And I have been known to put hand warmers in my gloves also. They really help. Since my Hubby is a hunter, he usually always has some hand warmers around somewhere.

5. Hydrate. I think that people forget that you need to hydrate even in the winter. So make sure to stay hydrated.

6. Screw Shoes - These are my latest addition, and I couldn't believe how helpful they really were. They are super easy to make, and I won't run outside this Winter without them.

I have to say, that so far I'm truly enjoying running in the Winter this year. Granted my runs have been short and sweet since I'm coming back from injury. But the views are breathtaking - I am totally in love with snow, and the cold air in my lungs has made me very thankful to be alive.

    1. Coming from MS, this is a BIG change for me. But I think I'd probably struggle with the heat and humidity more at this point.

Running My Life

Wow, has it really been 2 years since my last post? I suppose that I allowed life to get in the way. For any faithful blog readers, I apologize. Although, I'm not sure how many people actually read blogs anymore. I think most people use other social media platforms.  (By the way, drop by and say hi on Insta. )  But for some reason, each year when I pay for my google domain, I can't seem to let it go. As silly as it sounds, this little space is mine. And lately I've been struggling with ownership and acceptance. And my domain renewal was a not so gentle reminder that I have a voice .  Seriously, you'd think by 48 that I'd have this figured out - nope - apparently not. However, I am wise enough to know that we have a choice to allow situations to harms us or make us stronger. I'm choosing to let this mid-life quandary make me stronger. And because of this, I'm setting goals, taking charge, and reexamining priorities.  Movin' on...

Self Care Is Not Selfish It's Necessary

It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. And I'll say it just one more time in case you didn't hear me. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. I have found through experience that when I'm not taking care of myself, not only do I suffer but my family suffers. So ditch the mom guilt and take the time that you need! I have a tendency to keep pushing my needs aside until I reach a breaking point. We've had a very busy fun summer so far. However, I've struggled to get some quality ' me ' time to decompress. I'll spare you the meltdown that ensued. But the reality check that followed prompted me to take action.

When The Planner In You Must Be Flexible

In case you haven’t figured this out by now, I’m a planner. I know - shocker right?!? :) So although I love substitute teaching, it’s making the planner in me anxious. And it’s been reeking havoc on my workouts. Basically the morning of or maybe the night before, I find out if I’m working. So my day ( that I thought I had planned ) can be turned upside down in an instant. But, truthfully, isn’t that really the same with everyone?
