When Setbacks Interrupt Training And Goals

Oh where to begin..... there is so much that I want to say and yet I can't get my thoughts organized. I guess that's what happens when it's been so long since I've written. I haven't forgot you .... the truth is that I haven't found the exact answer as to how to do it all. Being out of my normal schedule hasn't helped, and finding the time to fit it all in is still a process. But here goes.....

A lot of you know that I signed up for two half marathons (one in September and one in October), but then my injury reared its ugly head again. (Pain Returns and I'm Back to Physical Therapy) And in the back of my mind the reality was that I may have to bail on the September half depending on how my body responds.

But I've discovered over the last couple of weeks that if I use a trigger point massager on my piriformis that the hip pain is much less... or even gone. The bursitis is still there, but if I ice after exercising and ice in the evening, that seems to be helping. And I've been using intervals of 30 second walks with 1 minute runs. And I'm happy to report that I am running pain free.

Not a lot of distance and certainly not fast... but I'm running again. So far my longest run is 3ish miles. And I've decided that I'm going to train for the September half marathon. I'm going to have to modify my 16 week plan since technically I should be on week 6. And I don't want to do too much too fast. I know that I'm not 100%, but I would like to give it a go. I know that I have to pay attention to my body. I know that I may have to modify as needed or rest more than I want, but I'm going to start the training and see what happens. Time will tell.

With life setbacks happen. I've learned that things rarely go from start to finish without a lot of bumps, bruises and detours along the way. This hip injury has definitely made me smarter when it comes to stretching and listening to those nagging sore places. I don't ignore them - I address them. I really hope that my injury is on the mend and that I can do this.

I plan to enjoy my summer with Lil Man as much as possible. This is his last summer before first grade, and this upcoming fall will bring a lot of changes to our family. In addition to him being in school full time, I will be seeking employment. And I'm hoping that such future employment will allow me to still follow my goals and enjoyment of social media. And the more I think about future employment, the more I realize that my blog and social media accounts are super important to me. I have a voice. In fact, I have plans to expand my presence on social media, instead of allowing it to shrink.

So my friends... stay tuned....

Writing is one of my passions, and I'm stepping out there on faith to follow my dream. If you like this blog or this post, please take a moment to share it with friends. Thank you for helping me follow my dream.

  1. I hate setbacks because they impact so negatively on your mindset, well done for carrying on though. Let us know how you get on x

Running My Life

Wow, has it really been 2 years since my last post? I suppose that I allowed life to get in the way. For any faithful blog readers, I apologize. Although, I'm not sure how many people actually read blogs anymore. I think most people use other social media platforms.  (By the way, drop by and say hi on Insta. )  But for some reason, each year when I pay for my google domain, I can't seem to let it go. As silly as it sounds, this little space is mine. And lately I've been struggling with ownership and acceptance. And my domain renewal was a not so gentle reminder that I have a voice .  Seriously, you'd think by 48 that I'd have this figured out - nope - apparently not. However, I am wise enough to know that we have a choice to allow situations to harms us or make us stronger. I'm choosing to let this mid-life quandary make me stronger. And because of this, I'm setting goals, taking charge, and reexamining priorities.  Movin' on...

Self Care Is Not Selfish It's Necessary

It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. And I'll say it just one more time in case you didn't hear me. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. I have found through experience that when I'm not taking care of myself, not only do I suffer but my family suffers. So ditch the mom guilt and take the time that you need! I have a tendency to keep pushing my needs aside until I reach a breaking point. We've had a very busy fun summer so far. However, I've struggled to get some quality ' me ' time to decompress. I'll spare you the meltdown that ensued. But the reality check that followed prompted me to take action.

When The Planner In You Must Be Flexible

In case you haven’t figured this out by now, I’m a planner. I know - shocker right?!? :) So although I love substitute teaching, it’s making the planner in me anxious. And it’s been reeking havoc on my workouts. Basically the morning of or maybe the night before, I find out if I’m working. So my day ( that I thought I had planned ) can be turned upside down in an instant. But, truthfully, isn’t that really the same with everyone?
