It Doesn't Have To Be A New Year For New Beginnings

Are you a resolutions kind of person? I used to be, but then realized I didn't keep most of them. Or I put too much pressure on myself to try to change too many things at once.

If you make resolutions - great - do whatever works for you. But I'd like to add that it doesn't have to be a new year, or a new month, a new week or even a new day to decide to to make a change.

For so many years I told myself "I'll start tomorrow... Monday... next week.. whatever excuse (because for me personally that's what it was) that I could try to validate. "I'm going to eat the rest of this bag of candy, and once it's gone I'm going to eat healthier." And that my friends is how I started binge eating.

Call it what you will. But yes it was a binge. Eating an enormous amount of something just because or because of some emotion is a binge. And I did it time and time again. I don't know how many bags and boxes of junk sweets that I have eaten to get rid of it so I can start tomorrow or to eat it just because.

And then one day, after a binge of too many candy bars to count and cookies on top of that, I looked down at my swollen hands that I could no longer bend. Sure I'd been having pain, and the pain this time was the worst, but it was the swelling that scared me. I could barely unbutton a button. I felt tears come to my eyes as I looked at what I was doing to my body. I heard myself mutter underneath my breath "You are killing yourself and all because of sugar." And it was in that moment that I decided to make a change. And How I Am Going To Overcome Sugar Addiction was written. I didn't finish off the cookies or the candy bars. I didn't wait until tomorrow or some other event passed. I decided in that moment it was time to make a change for me, for my health and for my family. And I asked you to join me, and I am so very thankful that I took that step. (What Happened After 14 Days Free of Sugar)

Overall, I'm mainly free of sugary junk treats. I am allowing them here and there in moderation. I'm still working on moderation, and I'm finding dark chocolate (80% or above) is fulfilling any sugar cravings that I'm having.

And I've also added other goals in my life.. and you can read those here (Making Goals A Priority).

But the point of this post is that you can decide at any moment of any day that you want to make a change. Whether you want to break a habit or create a habit or whatever it is in your life that you would like to see different, it all begins with making the decision.

Once the decision is made, put a plan in place, follow the plan and extend grace. Small changes can give big results.

Here's to New Beginnings....

  1. I'm so glad you're doing well with the no-sugar diet. I've getting a lot of advice about RA and a lot of people have told me to adhere to an antiinflammatory diet. I already eat pretty healthy--I don't know if I'm willing to give up everything, tho! We'll see how it goes.

Self Care Is Not Selfish It's Necessary

It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. And I'll say it just one more time in case you didn't hear me. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. I have found through experience that when I'm not taking care of myself, not only do I suffer but my family suffers. So ditch the mom guilt and take the time that you need! I have a tendency to keep pushing my needs aside until I reach a breaking point. We've had a very busy fun summer so far. However, I've struggled to get some quality ' me ' time to decompress. I'll spare you the meltdown that ensued. But the reality check that followed prompted me to take action.

Running My Life

Wow, has it really been 2 years since my last post? I suppose that I allowed life to get in the way. For any faithful blog readers, I apologize. Although, I'm not sure how many people actually read blogs anymore. I think most people use other social media platforms.  (By the way, drop by and say hi on Insta. )  But for some reason, each year when I pay for my google domain, I can't seem to let it go. As silly as it sounds, this little space is mine. And lately I've been struggling with ownership and acceptance. And my domain renewal was a not so gentle reminder that I have a voice .  Seriously, you'd think by 48 that I'd have this figured out - nope - apparently not. However, I am wise enough to know that we have a choice to allow situations to harms us or make us stronger. I'm choosing to let this mid-life quandary make me stronger. And because of this, I'm setting goals, taking charge, and reexamining priorities.  Movin' on...

When The Planner In You Must Be Flexible

In case you haven’t figured this out by now, I’m a planner. I know - shocker right?!? :) So although I love substitute teaching, it’s making the planner in me anxious. And it’s been reeking havoc on my workouts. Basically the morning of or maybe the night before, I find out if I’m working. So my day ( that I thought I had planned ) can be turned upside down in an instant. But, truthfully, isn’t that really the same with everyone?
