Take A Good Look

Take a good look - no really - take a really good look.

(Yeah that's my son photobombing the pic on the bosu ball - he loves that thing -ha)  But no, what I really want you to look at is the picture of my stomach.

See that area of fat around my belly button? That's my 'problem area' - the area that I try to hide - the area that I crop out of pics - the reason that my clothes don't fit - my muffin top - my extra handfuls and then some.

But look right above that area. See that line - the beginning of muscle definition - that wasn't there 4 weeks ago. That 'line' didn't exist. I'm not holding 'anything in' and that purple mark underneath my hand is where I painted over what I couldn't tell if it was my boob or the underside of my bra - so I covered it just in case.

I want you to look at this picture, really look at it, because I want you to realize something.
When I saw myself in the mirror today while working out, I had a choice. I could have focused in on the belly fat - the part about myself that I try to hide. Or I could focus on that line - the beginning of hard work starting to pay off. I also could have cropped out my gut and only shown you the 'progress'; instead I chose to show you the real reality.

What I'm saying is that when you see yourself, you have a choice. You can tear yourself apart and nit pick at the things that you don't like about yourself. Or you can see the positives and the progress even if they seem very small and focus on those.

I believe we really do have a choice in how we see ourselves.

  1. I was never comfortable with my body until my 50s. How sad is that?

  2. I know exactly what you mean. Thanks to PumpItUp classes, I am getting muscles in my shoulders and arms. I try to focus on that and not those persistently wobbly bat-wings. Keep up the good work.

    1. Thank you! I have a tendency to nit pick, and I'm trying my best to shift my focus :)

  3. YES!!!! I'm the same way. I won't lie and say that there are not parts of my body that I would change. However, in working out, I'm learning to appreciate the way my body is changing and reflecting how STRONG I am becoming. If I can't have skinny arms, I will have STRONG arms!!!

Self Care Is Not Selfish It's Necessary

It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. And I'll say it just one more time in case you didn't hear me. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. I have found through experience that when I'm not taking care of myself, not only do I suffer but my family suffers. So ditch the mom guilt and take the time that you need! I have a tendency to keep pushing my needs aside until I reach a breaking point. We've had a very busy fun summer so far. However, I've struggled to get some quality ' me ' time to decompress. I'll spare you the meltdown that ensued. But the reality check that followed prompted me to take action.

Running My Life

Wow, has it really been 2 years since my last post? I suppose that I allowed life to get in the way. For any faithful blog readers, I apologize. Although, I'm not sure how many people actually read blogs anymore. I think most people use other social media platforms.  (By the way, drop by and say hi on Insta. )  But for some reason, each year when I pay for my google domain, I can't seem to let it go. As silly as it sounds, this little space is mine. And lately I've been struggling with ownership and acceptance. And my domain renewal was a not so gentle reminder that I have a voice .  Seriously, you'd think by 48 that I'd have this figured out - nope - apparently not. However, I am wise enough to know that we have a choice to allow situations to harms us or make us stronger. I'm choosing to let this mid-life quandary make me stronger. And because of this, I'm setting goals, taking charge, and reexamining priorities.  Movin' on...

When The Planner In You Must Be Flexible

In case you haven’t figured this out by now, I’m a planner. I know - shocker right?!? :) So although I love substitute teaching, it’s making the planner in me anxious. And it’s been reeking havoc on my workouts. Basically the morning of or maybe the night before, I find out if I’m working. So my day ( that I thought I had planned ) can be turned upside down in an instant. But, truthfully, isn’t that really the same with everyone?
