Double Creek Half Marathon - Post Race Report

Can I get a WHOOOO HOOOOOOOO! Yep, I PRed. I'm not sure yet of my 'official' time. My garmin read 2:11:19. I'm thinking the clock was 2:11:21, but the results still haven't posted yet. Regardless, my time last year was 2:19:12 so this was a PR for me.

How was it? It was amazing, awful, this is great, this pretty much sucks, I'm so glad I'm doing this, whose bright idea was this anyway and then I hit mile 10ish.. do not walk, do not walk, do not walk, do not walk. I knew that my pace had slowed. I was actually on target (for awhile) for a 2:10 finish. But I felt myself getting slower. I did walk a few times here and there on some hills in the last few miles, but I forced myself to pick it back up and to keep going. I was so close to getting in under 2:15 which was my 2nd goal.

My first goal was to finish. My second was 2:15. My third was 2:10. So, as you can imagine, I was truly happy with myself.

Around 11 or so miles, I felt the first twinge of a cramp in my foot. Then it spread up my calf. No, no, no, not this time. In previous races, I've had issues with calf cramps. I immediately took some Endurolytes, and took some gel. It eased, but as I was trying to run faster during the last quarter mile, my leg cramped, and I had to back off the pace. I think I took in too much water and not enough electrolytes even though I did take the Endurolytes and a gel at about an hour into the race.

But I finished. And I finished smiling.

I'm really sore today. This is the first time I've ever been sore in my upper body. But as the day is going on, the soreness is getting better. I do plan to get in an easy run tomorrow unless my legs just protest too much.

And in case you are wondering, YES, I had ice cream yesterday after the race. :)

  1. Congratulations Amy! PR-ing on that course is an accomplishment. I was pleased with my performance although I didn't do nearly as well as you. AND - I didn't get any ice cream! :)

    1. Yep, as I started running the course, I remembered the hills (ha). It's a very nice course though. You get a little bit of everything along the way.

Self Care Is Not Selfish It's Necessary

It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. And I'll say it just one more time in case you didn't hear me. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. I have found through experience that when I'm not taking care of myself, not only do I suffer but my family suffers. So ditch the mom guilt and take the time that you need! I have a tendency to keep pushing my needs aside until I reach a breaking point. We've had a very busy fun summer so far. However, I've struggled to get some quality ' me ' time to decompress. I'll spare you the meltdown that ensued. But the reality check that followed prompted me to take action.

Running My Life

Wow, has it really been 2 years since my last post? I suppose that I allowed life to get in the way. For any faithful blog readers, I apologize. Although, I'm not sure how many people actually read blogs anymore. I think most people use other social media platforms.  (By the way, drop by and say hi on Insta. )  But for some reason, each year when I pay for my google domain, I can't seem to let it go. As silly as it sounds, this little space is mine. And lately I've been struggling with ownership and acceptance. And my domain renewal was a not so gentle reminder that I have a voice .  Seriously, you'd think by 48 that I'd have this figured out - nope - apparently not. However, I am wise enough to know that we have a choice to allow situations to harms us or make us stronger. I'm choosing to let this mid-life quandary make me stronger. And because of this, I'm setting goals, taking charge, and reexamining priorities.  Movin' on...

When The Planner In You Must Be Flexible

In case you haven’t figured this out by now, I’m a planner. I know - shocker right?!? :) So although I love substitute teaching, it’s making the planner in me anxious. And it’s been reeking havoc on my workouts. Basically the morning of or maybe the night before, I find out if I’m working. So my day ( that I thought I had planned ) can be turned upside down in an instant. But, truthfully, isn’t that really the same with everyone?
